The Things We Brought

As a floating city, Venice owes most of its logistics and livability to a community of boat drivers who cross the lagoon every day, at every hour. A reportage by Federico Vespignani.

Water transportation workers are essential figures connecting the lagoon and allowing Venice to function. Still, they remain largely unseen. In this photographic essay, Federico Vespignani celebrates and explores their world. The reportage includes a few black-and-white snapshots by Andrea Vendramin, a freelance hauler who has assembled an archive of on-field photos from his everyday shifts.“ Vendramin’s perspective on how commodities and people cross the lagoon challenges the common aesthetic of a city that’s largely seen just as a tourist mecca,” Vespignani said.
